Finals - Key Stage 3

Introduction to KS3 Finals at Leeds East Academy

The KS3 Finals mark a significant milestone in the academic year at Leeds East Academy, providing students with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and understanding they have developed throughout the year. These are more than just a set of exams, these assessments play a key role in recognising progress, celebrating achievement, and shaping the next steps in each student’s learning journey.

Assessments will take a variety of forms, ranging from written examinations to practical and performance-based tasks, depending on the subject. This broad approach ensures that students are able to showcase a diverse range of abilities, including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and the practical application of knowledge in real-world contexts.

This are scheduled to take place the week commencing Monday 27th April, and Monday 4th May, the KS3 Finals also provide teachers with meaningful insights into student progress. This enables staff to accurately evaluate strengths and identify any gaps in knowledge or skills, allowing for targeted support and intervention where needed.

At Leeds East Academy, we encourage all students to approach their Finals with confidence and determination. These assessments are an opportunity to reflect on their hard work, demonstrate resilience, and take pride in how far they have come, while also preparing them for continued success in the future.

Finals in Summary

  • To assess how much students have learned and understood across all subjects
  • To identify strengths and areas for improvement
  • To help teachers plan targeted support and future lessons
  • To develop important exam skills such as revision, time management, and resilience
  • To prepare students for future assessments, including GCSEs

In School Preparation for Finals

  • We have supported effective preparation in school through introducing key revision techniques during Guardian Time.
  • Students have engaged in focused revision of core subjects during Guardian Time, reinforcing key concepts in English, Maths, and Science to consolidate their understanding.
  • A dedicated revision guide has been provided to help students organise their learning, strengthen essential knowledge, and guide independent study.
  • Teachers have led targeted in-class revision sessions, offering guidance, clarification, and support to address individual learning needs.

We have aimed to build students’ confidence by promoting good study habits and encouraging independent learning alongside teacher-led activities. Through these strategies, we have ensured that all students feel fully prepared and supported ahead of their KS3 Finals, benefiting from a consistent, structured, and well-planned approach.

How Can I Support my Child with their Finals

At Leeds East Academy, we recognise the important role parents and guardians play in helping students prepare for their KS3 Finals. Here are some key ways you can support your child to achieve their best:

  • Establish a structured revision routine at home – Encourage your child to set aside regular, manageable blocks of time for revision, balancing different subjects to maintain focus and avoid overwhelm.
  • Utilise and reinforce school-provided materials – Support your child by referring to the revision guide, worksheets, and practice tasks provided by the school, helping them revisit key concepts in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Encourage active learning strategies – Promote techniques such as self-quizzing, summarising notes, teaching concepts back, and creating flashcards or mind maps, which help deepen understanding and retention.
  • Create a supportive study environment – Ensure your child has a quiet, distraction-free space for study, while offering encouragement, praise, and regular check-ins to build confidence and motivation.
  • Promote wellbeing and balance – Help your child manage stress by encouraging regular breaks, physical activity, healthy meals, and sufficient sleep, reinforcing that effective revision works best alongside good self-care.

By working together with the school, parents can help students feel confident, organised, and prepared to succeed in their KS3 Finals.

How Memory Works: Helping Your Child Learn

Understanding how memory works can make revision more effective. At Leeds East Academy, we want parents to know how students remember, retain, and recall information.

  • Encoding: Getting Information In
Memory starts when new information is noticed and processed. Encourage your child to focus fully, take notes, and make connections to what they already know.
  •  Storage: Keeping Information Safe
Information is stored in short-term or long-term memory. Repetition, practice, and active use of knowledge help move it into long-term memory.
  • Retrieval: Bringing Information Out
Memory is only useful if it can be recalled. Regular quizzes, self-testing, and teaching back concepts improve recall during exams.
  • Active Learning: Strengthening Connections
Using techniques like summarising notes, creating mind maps, or making flashcards strengthens neural pathways, making memories easier to access.
  • Rest and Wellbeing: Supporting Memory
Sleep, breaks, exercise, and healthy nutrition all improve memory retention and recall. A rested brain remembers better!

Five Revision Techniques

  • Look, Cover, Check
Encourage your child to look at a fact or concept, cover it, then check if they can recall it from memory. This reinforces retention and builds confidence.
  • Flashcards
Using flashcards allows students to test themselves on key terms, formulas, or concepts. Quick and portable, they’re perfect for active recall and repetition.
  • Mind Maps
Mind maps help organise information visually, showing connections between ideas. They support understanding and make revision more memorable.
  • Quizzing
Regular quizzes, either self-made or using online tools, help students practise retrieving knowledge, highlighting strengths and areas to revisit.
  • Repetition and Review
Revisiting topics multiple times over days or weeks strengthens memory and ensures key information moves from short-term to long-term memory.
