World Book Day 2017

A worldwide festival of Literature

On 2nd March, Leeds East Academy became part of the global celebration of all things bookish for World Book Day 2017. As part of the worldwide festival of literature, staff dressed up as their favourite literary creations, which included Alice (from Wonderland) and two Harry Potters.

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The main aim of World Book Day in the UK is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. As a Reading Academy, Leeds East Academy sees World Book Day at the ultimate opportunity to raise the profile of recreational reading, in a world where young people are bombarded by audio-visual media. It is a time where the whole school comes together to rediscover the power of reading and writing for pleasure, which directly feeds into students' literacy.

Mr Stokes said: "Thank you to all of our staff - including the two Harry Potters - who enlivened the day with their imaginative use of literary costume. World Book Day is an opportunity to rediscover the fun of personal reading, which has a direct impact on young people's literacy. At Leeds East Academy we have a rich library of material, furnished with many inspirational novels which I hope students will investigate and enjoy not just for today, but throughout the rest of their time at the Academy."
