Step Into Sport

Students from Leeds East Academy attended a day at John Charles Sports Centre for the Step into Sport Conference. The day aims to promote sports leadership and sporting opportunities for students with disabilities.

Last term, students from Leeds West Academy met disabled athletes who shared their experiences, their determination, resilience, and ambition. Students were surprised at the determination the athletes shared and challenges they have overcome. The group then thought about their own role models and discussed this with students from other schools. The students then went on to take part in activities to learn how to lead with games which were designed to be inclusive for all ages and abilities.

Mr Major said: "One student was overheard sharing his own personal stories of overcoming countless operations, to be able to walk without the use of splints and gave inspirational advice and encouragement."

From the group of attendees, Mr Major picked his group of School Sport Leaders based on the effort, commitment and leadership skills which was demonstrated. These students will help with future sporting events within the Academy to further build on the skills they have learnt.
