RESTEC Project Retrospective

Prior to the Christmas break, a group of Leeds East Academy students had the privilege of being asked to perform at The Stanley and Aubrey Theatre in Leeds City Centre, as part of Phoenix Dance Theatre's RESTEC project.

The project involves working with a professional dance artist from Phoenix Dance Theatre to create a piece of choreography which explores the theme of HIV and Aids in young people. The project runs every year and Leeds East Academy have been involved in this event for the last five years.

The purpose of the event is to raise the awareness of HIV and AIDS in young people and forms part of the nationwide events taking place during World AIDS Day. The dancers involved in the project from Years 8,9,10 and 11 demonstrated excellent commitment to the project and approached the sensitive subject matter in a mature way. The performance took place on Friday the 9th December with our students performing alongside professional youth dance companies such as Phoenix Dance Theatre and The New Vic Dance Company from London.

Our students were the consummate professionals at the performance resulting in a stunning thought provoking piece of contemporary dance. Sam Broadbent the choreographer from Phoenix commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the girls again this year, it was so lovely to have such a big group and to witness their growth and development over the six weeks. I’m so pleased with the performance they gave on Friday and for their hard work throughout the process! I hope to work with them again in the near future and in the meantime I hope they continue to approach their dance sessions with enthusiasm and energy."

Ms Carrie adds: "Overall a fantastic piece of work from our students, showcasing our Academy values of; excellence, confidence and ambition. A huge well done to all involved!"
