Numeracy and Literacy Coaching

At Leeds East Academy we fully understand the positive impact acquiring good numeracy and literacy skills can have on a child’s future. This is why we are feeling extremely positive about the launch of Numeracy and Literacy in coaching this week.
Every week Tuesday and Thursday’s 20-minute coaching session will be dedicated to further developing the numeracy and literacy skills of our students. During these sessions each student will have the opportunity to participate in bespoke Numeracy and Literacy activities which are tailored to support the needs of each individual student ensuring progress in each area.
Miss. Gil who is taking the lead on developing the Numeracy program strongly believes that: "Numeracy in coaching creates another fantastic opportunity for students to develop and improve their numeracy skills in school. This additional 20 minutes of learning, that is tailored to the students' needs, is specifically based on the core skills in maths. For students to be successful in maths GCSE exams the core skills need to be fully understood and students need to be able to use them with fluency. By completing the core skills numeracy resources in coaching, students have the opportunity to practice their maths in a different environment to their standard classroom with someone who they feel comfortable with, their coach. This will not only give coaches a better insight into their students' academic needs but also be a chance to boost student confidence in maths."
Our Year 11 Student Leaders, who are excellent ambassadors for the school, feel that the introduction of Numeracy and Literacy in coaching is an exciting development for students. Chelsea Blair believes that: “Having good literacy and numeracy skills are the foundations which will help young people to fulfil our core value of ‘Ambition’”. Abigail Buckroyd added to this by stressing the importance of good Numeracy and Literacy as being the key to exam success.
The literacy strand of coaching will further develop and build on the work which has already taken place in relation to embedding literacy across the curriculum. Current research also shows there is overwhelming evidence that literacy, happiness and success are directly related. People with good literacy skills are more likely to have:
• higher self-esteem
• better health
• better jobs
• higher wages
This is because they are more able to take advantage of the opportunities that life may offer them.
Ultimately this is an exciting development for coaching and one we are sure will have a positive impact on the future success of our students.
