Laying the foundations for a career with MACE

Building a job in construction

Mace Project Managers, Luke Goodwin and Richard Shaw, visited Leeds East Academy on 19th July to speak to our Year 9 students about careers in the construction industry.

Luke and Richard talked about the careers paths that they took to progress to the roles they are in and what their roles involve.

They also mentioned the high profile construction projects that the company has worked on; including the London Eye, The Shard, the Victoria Gate in Leeds and the Coronation Street set in Manchester.  They explained some of the challenges of these projects and the project planning behind them.

Luke and Richard also talked through the wide variety of job roles available in the construction industry, such as Designers, Civil Engineers, Lawyers, Architects HR Managers and Quantity Surveyors, just to name a few.  They explained the skills required for these roles, as well as the salaries to expect.  They presented the various different progression routes that young people could take to get into the industry and these included university, apprenticeships and work experience.

At the beginning of the talk, when asked who was interested in a career in construction, no one put up his or her hand.  At the end of the talk, when asked the same question, around half of the class put up their hands.  Students asked the employers some great questions about the industry and progression routes and learnt further information from this.

Mrs Hughes said: “Having Luke and Richard visit school and speak to the students has broadened the students’ knowledge of different careers and industries that they may not have considered.  It has also given them a chance to ask questions to the people actually doing these jobs and to understand what the roles involve, enabling them to make a more informed career choice when leaving school.”
