Journey to Student Leadership

At Leeds East Academy, we know that achieving success is something that everyone welcomes in their lives. The joy and fulfilment that comes from accomplishing goals is a reward worth having all by itself. Unfortunately, there are certain common barriers that can block young people from believing in themselves. Take Adam and Luke; both these students presented some personal challenges in concentration and motivation.
Three years later, both young men have overcome their obstacles and have become hardworking, resilient and respectful young people who have learned to believe in themselves. This belief has led both students applying successfully for the prestigious position of Year 11 Student Leaders. They are now supporting the school’s aim to be a place where everyone enjoys learning whilst finding solutions to problems and are embracing their responsibilities as role models.
Luke said: “I realised that I needed to change my behaviour because I was not going to get the grades I needed to get into college.” Adam echoes this view and adds: “I am proud to be a Student Leader and this would have never have happened if I didn’t make changes to my attitude.”
Senior Vice Principal Mr Rafiq explains: “Achieving success is a very fulfilling moment for Adam and Luke who developed the desire to improve, and turn their negative energy into positive energy to become highly motivated to put themselves in a position where they can reach their objectives and achieve their full potential. The encouragement we receive from our teachers, parents and friends plays an important role in our emotional learning. If a student adopts a mindset of ‘always trying their best’ and learning from past failures, they’ll generally have a positive outlook on their ability to learn."
