Active and Vocational

Subject Areas are split into three distinct areas to ensure quality of delivery and to help raise standards across the board. These are Core Skills (English, Maths and Science), Society and Cultures (all Humanities subjects, Languages, Health and Social Care, Psychology and Sociology) and Active and Vocational (PE, Performance Arts, Art and Technology). Below are the qualifications on offer in those areas.

Art

Art and Technology encompass KS3 Art and Design and Design and Technology. Students at this key stage have two Technology lessons and one Art lesson per week. Students make their options towards the end of year 8 and they can opt for the following KS4 courses:  GCSE Art and Design Graphics, Art Unendorsed, Design and Technology Product Design, Design and Technology Textiles and Food Technology. BTECs in Fashion and Clothing and Interactive Media are also an option. Students who choose to study an Art or Technology course will have two lessons of their chosen subject per week. Students can opt to complete more than one of our courses.  At KS5 we offer AS and A2 Art and Design Graphics and BTEC level 3 in Art and Design and Fashion.

Students, as artists and designers achieving, enjoying and reaching their true potential are at the heart of the Art and Technology area at Leeds East Academy. We always encourage students to embrace a ‘Can do’ attitude which helps to create a positive ethos.

Drama

Drama is a popular and successful department at Leeds East Academy. The ethos of the Drama department is that students learn of and through the art-form: following a carefully planned curriculum where they not only develop excellent performing skills, students also learn to make sense of the world around them.

Students have one hour a week at KS3 and have the opportunity to participate in a range of after school clubs throughout the year.

At KS4 and 5 students will study BTEC Performing Arts (Levels 2 and 3). Our results are consistently high and our older students gain a wealth of experience refining their theatre making skills and performing in a variety of settings.

At Leeds East Academy we have a brand new, state of the art Drama studio with it's own lighting and sound facilities as well as the auditorium where students have the opportunity to perform in a professional setting.

Physical Education

PE is a popular subject at Leeds East Academy and students achieve well. Students take part in a wide range of physical activities that develops their teamwork and communication skills. These include team games such as Football, Rugby, Netball and Basketball, net games such as Badminton, Tennis and Table Tennis and striking and fielding games such as Rounders, Cricket and Softball. Students also work on performing at maximum levels and reaching their personal best in Athletics and they develop their creativity and ability to accurately replicate actions in Gymnastics, Trampolining and Dance.

In addition to this students take part in fitness session that develops understanding of their current levels of fitness and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. In all areas of the PE curriculum pupils are encouraged to take the lead in small groups experiencing different roles in sport such as umpire, coach, score keeper, time keeper and captain. PE lessons regularly feature self and peer assessment where students evaluate their own and others performances making suggestions about how they can improve.

Students develop knowledge and understanding of the rules of each activity and are able to follow rules understanding their importance including reasons of safety. The PE department offers an extensive extra-curricular program every lunchtime and evening that includes Football for boys and girls in all year groups, Rugby, Gymnastics, Basketball, Badminton and Table Tennis. Students regularly represent the Academy in many of these sports and enjoy being part of a team.

We have strong community links with local clubs that involves students visiting clubs and club coaches coming into school to run session during lessons and after school. These links include the Leeds Rhinos/Leeds Rugby Foundation who we have a particularly strong link with, which has resulted in players visiting the school. The PE facilities are excellent and include a well equipped Sports Hall, Activity Studio and extensive outdoor spaces that include Tennis Courts, Netball Courts, Rugby and Football pitches and Athletics areas. Students who enjoy PE and achieve well at Key Stage 3 go on to study our popular BTEC Sport course where we have maintained a 100% pass rate over the last 3 years.

Information Technology

As one of the most rapidly changing subjects, ICT is the study of technology and systems that dominate our personal and working lives.

As mobile phones become as powerful as laptops, and as the generation of social media, we believe that it is our responsibility to prepare all students at the school for a vibrant and exciting digital world.  Students have the opportunity to develop a critical approach to both systems and software, through academic and vocational routes.  The innovative curriculum at LWA has been specifically designed to nurture a passion for technology and provide our students skills applicable in each and every career path.

We are one of the most well equipped ICT departments in Leeds, an impressive suite of dedicated ICT rooms, green screen studio and Apple Mac suites.  The spacious and well-resourced suites are open to students outside of lessons, with specific support during afternoon sessions and Gaming/Computing Enrichment Programmes. At Leeds West Academy, we deliver courses tailored to our student’s needs; each course is linked to a real life organisation, who will host students and contextualise the course content to demonstrate the application of skills and theory within the subject.
