Home Learning 

Home Learning at Leeds East Academy  

Home learning is important because it enables children to: 

  • Continue learning outside of the classroom 
  • Consolidate newly-acquired knowledge, revise prior learning and practise skills 
  • Develop the self discipline, resilience and confidence to study independently 
  • Involve parents/carers in their learning 

Research has proven that completing work independently enhances a child’s learning and improves achievement.  To this end, subject areas have carefully planned home learning to embed the powerful knowledge and key terminology from the curriculum.  

At Leeds East Academy home-learning will focus on the knowledge organiser and reading. 

Knowledge Organisers

The knowledge organiser is a booklet which details the powerful knowledge and vocabulary that your child will be learning each term.  Every page has been developed by the different subject areas to detail all the key information, concepts and subject specific terminology/information related to the units being studied in the curriculum.    

Rationale 

  • The focus of formal examinations has moved to retrieval and application of knowledge This puts increasing pressure on children to know and retain even more information for longer. 
  • Provide children and parents with an overview of the learning journey for each term and the resources to acquire the powerful knowledge. 
  • The secret to success is to regularly revisit the knowledge to be learned (known as ‘spaced retrieval’). This helps transfer the knowledge from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. This not only helps to make it ‘stick’, but it also frees up our short-term memory for new learning and experiences.  

The knowledge organiser will be an integral part of learning and must be brought to school every day so that it can be referred to in lesson and used to recall prior learning.  

Reading

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to a child’s educational performance. Likewise, evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who do not, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge, stronger writing and oracy skills, and a better understanding of other cultures.   

We hold a heavy focus on explicitly teaching vocabulary so that our pupils can engage in, and enjoy, reading. It has been proven that a child's understanding of the vocabulary of the text must be at least 75% for them to be able to understand it. A child's reading ability is important to their success in school as it will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills.  

Home Learning Hub

Home learning does not need to take place at home! 

We will welcome pupils to access our home learning hub on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3.30pm – 4.30pm.  Teaching staff will support pupils to engage with independent learning providing a productive workspace.  IT facilities will be available should children wish to complete coursework or additional research. 

Home Learning Expectations

  • Pupils should read for 30 minutes at least four time a week 
  • Pupils should complete between 1 – 1.5 hours of home learning every weekday 
  • Each subject area will set one piece of home learning per week based on a key topic or key vocabulary in their knowledge organiser 
  • Home learning tasks will be recorded in the planner and will have a set date for completion 
  • Children will learn this information using one of the cognitive learning techniques.  They will produce work in their home learning exercise book using approximately half a side of A4 to demonstrate their practice 
  • The home learning practice completed in the exercise book will be checked on the due date 
  • The key knowledge/vocabulary set for home learning will be quizzed to review their comprehension 
  • A full timetable of home learning is available on the website 

We believe that home learning is integral to supporting children develop independent learning skills.  Where home learning is not completed this will be followed by a conversation with their class teacher and a homework comment.  If children do not complete three pieces of home learning in their exercise book, they will be referred to the home learning hub to access support for independent study.  

Recognition 

Pupils will be praised for the independent learning they complete using stamps, postcards and celebration of achievement.
