Assistant Principal (Behaviour & Safety)
Toby graduated in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University in 2000 where he specialised in Installation Art. Inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell and the land art of Chris Drury, he stills takes time to further his artistic development; enjoying the discipline of sculpture and drawing in wire. Toby enjoyed a variety of Jobs after graduating, including a spell as a portrait artist until he found his calling in tutoring and ultimately teaching in 2003.
Toby has fulfilled a variety of leadership roles within his time at Leeds East Academy, most recently, Assistant Principal for Behaviour, Safety and Careers. He contributes towards a strong Art department which regularly achieves above national average for its outcomes in Arts-based GCSEs.
In addition to teaching, Toby is currently studying a Masters and is engaged in research into ‘teaching frameworks’ and the ‘creative cycle,’ which he has used to help the structuring of independent learning and sustained practical investigation for students.
Toby strives to improve all aspects of academic life at Leeds East Academy and has implemented an innovative whole school behaviour targeting system. He also developed a pastoral model which maps all the requirements for ‘Prevent, SMSC, SEAL, ECM and the PSHCE curriculum into a whole school approach. Ofsted 2015 described it as a ‘strength of the school’.
He also enjoys camping and harbours an ambition to test his survival and ‘bushcraft’ skills in an expedition based on ‘aboriginal’ Britain.
