Best Ever Class Sizes to Average 17

A major new investment in teachers and resources

Leeds East Academy is delighted to announce the recruitment of 37 new members of staff as part of a wider programme for school enhancement. The expanded provision of teachers and subject leaders will ensure that the average class size is an unprecedented 17 students per teacher in September 2017.

Mr Stokes said: “I am delighted to drive forward crucial improvements to our school, which will directly benefit the learning experience of every child. By re-evaluating the school’s spending, we have made substantial savings allowing us to expand our family of education professionals. Teachers are the most important element in an outstanding school and I am determined to invest in exceptional staff to secure the best outcomes for every student at Leeds East Academy.”

The increased teaching body also has a dramatic impact on working patterns for teachers, who will see up to a 58% reduction in marking thanks to smaller class sizes, providing staff with more time to focus on lesson planning and learning enhancement.

Mr Stokes has also been making dramatic improvements to existing school facilities. Vibrant signage promoting future careers has become part of the fabric of the school, whilst the newly-established 7 Core Values are exhibited across the building, buttressing the school community’s vision for ambition and excellence. Leadership offices have been prominently relocated in the heart of the school and the dining area has been substantially expanded, providing more space per student during break.

Lewis, a student in Year 7 said: “The canteen is now a place I want to go to as you can sit in a big group with all of your friends and it’s much better than it was before.”

The next phase includes major investments in technology to support learning. Mr Stokes explains: "We’ve provided iPads for all of our staff to remotely access data and quickly track progress, providing an efficient and secure paper-free environment. In September 2017 all classrooms will be upgraded with Interactive 4K Display Panels and in 2018 we're introducing iPads for all students in Year 10 and 11, with the remainder of the school issued with iPads and online planners by 2019. Leeds East Academy is enjoying a transformative period, which is reflected in our highest number of student applications to date. I am proud to lead one of the finest-resourced schools in the region, supported by a substantial body of outstanding teachers."

Mr Whitaker, Executive Principal of The White Rose Academies Trust, adds: “It is the unwavering vision of our Trust that our Academies will be rated as Outstanding by Ofsted within three years. The progressive steps Chris Stokes is taking to transform the standard of learning at Leeds East Academy will ensure that we meet that goal, with the ultimate outcome of raising and fulfilling the aspirations of each and every young person in East Leeds.”
